Food is a favorite topic of conversation for most backpackers. Adequate and high quality food can make or break any backpacking. Your body will need the right balance and variety of simple sugars, carbohydrates, and proteins to maintain your energy level throughout the day on the Trail. The best method for feeding your body on the trail is to eat frequently. You will also need to feel pampered by eating good tasting foods that you really enjoy, especially when the top of the mountain doesn’t seem to be getting any closer!
Hikeu provides food for all of our backpacking adventures, EXCEPT the end-to-end trek of the Long Trail. Food planning consultation and assistance will be provided for the end-to-end trek.
The food provided during our trips is what we have eaten ourselves many, many times before. Of course there are personal taste preferences, dietary restrictions and personal restrictions to take into account. When your trip is confirmed we will send you a food selection questionnaire to provide each of our participants with food that will suit their needs and desires.
The following is a partial listing of the various foods we will offer, just to give you an idea. Please let us know if you have additional questions. We will be happy to answer any questions you may have prior to making your reservations as well.
Breakfast
Instant oatmeal and other cereals, pop-tarts, cereal bars, fresh fruit, dried fruit, dried yogurt, granola, hot drinks; tea, cider, hot chocolate, Emergen-C. Meals are prepared with boiling water only.
Lunch
We never cook lunch on the trail, so lunches and snacks look much the same and consist of hand food. Bagels, tortillas, cheese, crackers, Fritos, Chex party mix, granola, energy bars, candy bars, hard candy, mixed nuts, beef/turkey jerky, sandwiches, fresh or dried fruit, raw vegetables, various G.O.R.P. mixes (good old raisins and peanuts), and drink mix.
Dinner
Dinners are dehydrated entrees in a pouch that can be re-hydrated with boiling water. Other dinner supplements may include instant soups, and any items listed for lunch. Meals are prepared with boiling water only. No separate cooking is feasible.
